Teamfight Tactics (TFT) How do Portals and Legends Work in Runeterra Reforged?

Where will you end up?

Teamfight Tactics is gearing up for its next major update Runeterra Reforged. Set nine will introduce several new mechanics players may be unfamiliar with such as Region Portals and Legends. To better understand both, we've put together a handy guide to how to use portals and Legends when the next set releases. So, prepare to teleport from map to map and choose your preferred Legend as we walk you through how each works.

How do Potals Work in Teamfight Tactics: Runeterra Reforged?

When you first load into a game of Runeterra Reforged, you'll notice three portals on the map. They replace the Carousel that was part of the Monsters Attack! release. You and up to seven other players vote on which portal you want to enter by moving your Tactician into it. However, you won't teleport through the portal just yet as a vote needs to be decided first.

As soon as each player has selected a portal, the vote will begin. All votes will then be equally weighed and a portal will be chosen at random once voting is completed. All votes do is influence the probability a portal will be chosen. For instance, if seven people vote for The Immortal Bastion of Noxus, and only one person votes for the Stillwater Hold of Piltover, there is a seven in eight chance of teleporting to Noxus and a one in eight likelihood of going to Stillwater Hold.

Each portals will take you to a new part of Runeterra where you'll find a different ruleset for each map. There will be at least a minimum of 28 portals you can choose from when the game launches. This leaves a high potential that more portals will be created as set nine is developed.

How do Legends Work in Teamfight Tactics: Runeterra Reforged?

Legends are new for Runeterra Reforged and let you choose Augments before a match begins. You will be able to choose form 15 Legends and each one presents a unique playstyle. Before a game starts, you'll be able to pick your Legend in the pre-game lobby in a similar fashion to choosing a Tactician, Arena, or Boom.

Each Legend comes with its own list of Augments and represent your leftmost Augment choices. The first Legend Augment is of equal power to Augments of the same tier — Silver, Gold, Prismatic — while the second and third Augments are slightly weaker than Augments of their same tier. The second and third Augments are meant to be used as a fall-back just in case you find yourself in a scenario where your build isn't as beneficial as you'd thought. However, there is good news as you can reroll your Augments but only up to 18 times during a game.

With the second and third Augments being weaker than the first, it reduces the advantage of creating a composition that maximizes these guaranteed Augments before you a game begins. Augments are broken up into three tiers:

  • 2-1
  • 3-2
  • 4-2

Each tier is also linked to a specific power of Silver, Gold, and Prismatic. The higher the tier and power level, the more powerful and beneficial the Augment is.

All 15 Legends have their own unique Augments you can choose from and there are more than 100 Augments in the game. However, if you find you are a veteran player, you can opt to choose Poro Legends. These Legends forgo choosing Augments and instead rely on Augments chosen at random.

Runeterra Reforged releases alongside patch 13.12 on June 14. If you want to get all of the latest up-to-date stats and player leaderboards, check out our official Teamfight Tactics stat tracker!
