League of Legend's 2023 ranked season is playing out a bit differently than previous years. Back in January, players saw their ranks reset back to Iron level as part of Riot Games' new rank system, but that was just split one. Split two was just announced and with it players will once again begin anew.
While players knew the split was coming, they had no idea when exactly the second split was set to hit. A blog post in March stated the second split may come around November, but it's way sooner than expected. A social media post from the official League of Legends Twitter says split two will begin July 17, at 23:59 CST.
As to why exactly the changes were made comes down to a few reasons. According to Riot, there are a number of players that hit their rank goals in the middle of the year, but many of them either stop playing ranked games or create a new account and only to do it all over again. Thus, the changes were implemented to not only incentivize players to continue playing ranked, but to give them more chances to earn more rewards.
Get ready for a mid-season shakeup.

Therefore, players will now find there are an increased number of rewards able to be earned earlier on. For example, players will now be able to unlock a Victiorious Skin even if they hit Gold rank and drop back down to Silver. Players will also have the chance to earn rewards including Hextech Keys, Chests, and emotes.
On top of the mentioned changes, Riot updated promotion series between tiers from the best of five matches to the best of three. If you want to keep track of LoL ranks and who's at the top each split, don’t forget to check out our official Stat Tracker for League of Legends.
