Activision Demands Reddit Identify Call of Duty Warzone Leaker

Activision has invoked the Digital Millennium Copyright Act against Reddit to provide identifying information regarding the recent Call of Duty: Warzone leak.

Call of Duty Publisher Activision has filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) subpoena against social media platform Reddit, in an attempt to learn the identity of the person(s) behind the recent leaks which revealed the upcoming Call of Duty: Warzone title.

On Wednesday, February 12th, a Redditor posted to the /r/ModernWarfare subreddit with an image which appears to be the key art for an upcoming Battle Royale title named Call of Duty: Warzone. We've already covered this leak in-depth and provided a detailed explanation of the events leading up to it - so check that out if you're interested.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Battle Royale mode may be named Warzone
With the launch excitement of Modern Warfare Season 2 dying down, interest has suddenly peaked once again as what appears to be promotional art for a title named Call of Duty: Warzone has leaked online from an anonymous source.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Activision's subpoena to Reddit is to "identify alleged infringers." The subpoena was filed two days after the post was made and states the following; It also includes a link to the original submission, titled "I found this image online, not sure what it is," which has now been deleted by the user in question.

Reddit is the service provider to which the subject of the subpoena-Reddit user 'Assyrian2410' – posted infringing Activision content. The Content infringes Activision's exclusive rights under copyright law. Specifically, it infringes Activision's rights in its popular video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

When contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, Reddit declined to comment on the matter. Furthermore, Activision did not provide a statement before the report was published. Reddit is very transparent when it comes to their compliance with legal requests, so it's expected that the company will do just that - allowing Activision to peruse the user who originally submitted the copyrighted content legally.

Originated in 1998, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act protects internet-based companies from liability for copyright infringement if one of its users posts content that's protected without permission. In exchange, the company has to respond to requests from copyright owners to take down infringing material, among other rules for compliance.
