Riot Reveals LoL Ranked Changes for 2024: Three Ranked Splits and Preseason Changes

Big changes are on the horizon for the upcoming LoL Ranked Season 2024.

In a recent League of Legends dev update, Riot unveils plans and massive changes to the Ranked System for Preseason and Season 2024. Here's a comprehensive overview of what lies ahead.

Three Ranked Splits for Season 2024

A few months after splitting the season into two, Riot is once more altering the ranked system. Beginning next year's season, there will be three splits, each lasting for four months. They wrote “We split this year's (2023) season into two splits to make Ranked meaningful across the whole year, rather than players plateauing halfway through and either leaving Ranked or switching to smurfs. With the mid-year reset behind us, more players are still playing Ranked in the current middle-of-the-year window than in previous years. By adding November and December to the season and shifting to three four-month splits, we think we'll see even more improvements.”

Much like this year's season, the number of Victorious skins will also increase by one.

The change was made by Riot to boost player engagement and maintain their motivation even after reaching specific milestones or desired ranks. Additionally, by dividing the season into three parts, Riot can implement significant game changes before each split begins without disrupting players' progress as they strive to climb ranks. Major adjustments that typically happen during midseason will now occur before the second split, with only minor changes introduced at the start of the third split

League of Legends Ranked Split Schedule for Season 2024

As per the article, these are the start dates for the PBE Season 2024 Changes, Beginning of Season 2024 and the three splits.

  • November 20, 2023: Season 2024 Gameplay Changes arrive on the PBE
  • January 9, 2024: Split 1
  • May 2024: Split 2
  • September 2024: Split 3

Preseason to be removed from League of Legends

In League of Legends, the preseason occurs on live servers between the end of the current season and the start of the next season. During this time, players can still use the ranked queue, but they won't receive ranked rewards.  It's also when major gameplay changes for the upcoming season are introduced, allowing players to get used to them and the developers to test if any changes are too strong or too weak.

However, the 2024 LoL Preseason will be exclusively available on the Public Beta Environment (PBE) starting from November 20, 2023. Previously, players had the option to participate in the preseason to test new items and changes before the season officially began. Consequently, those who played during the preseason had an advantage over those who started at the beginning of the season, and this is something that Riot wants to change. By removing Preseason from live servers, all players can access and learn each change and addition to the game together at the beginning of the year.
