Valorant developers discuss Netcode and 128-tick servers

In the latest episode of the Dev Diaries YouTube series, the Valorant developers offered some more insight into Netcode and the 128-tick servers.

Valorant’s Technical Engineering Lead, David Straily, and Technical Director, Dave Heironymus, gave fans a behind the scenes look at the systems behind Riot’s upcoming shooter.

One way that they are able to have a better influence over player experience is with Riot Direct. This is effectively an ISP that they built themselves, which will allow them to adapt their network in line with the demand of the player base.

Heironymus explained, “The great thing about Riot Direct is, it’s Riot! Anywhere there is a hole, as we learn more about Valorant and Valorant players, and where people are playing from, we can build that network”. That means that unlike in other titles, they don’t have to rely upon third parties to make a decision on which players are best supported.

Throughout the video, they talked a lot about competitive integrity. Straily went into detail on how Valorant are looking to ensure that individual players are in control of the outcome of each match. To do this, it is crucial to minimise the effects that poor server performance can have on a player.

The Engineering Lead went on to give a visual demonstration of how the 128-tick servers will help to reduce peeker’s advantage and improve hit registration. The difference is noticeable, and it is clear to see that Riot have a genuine interest in keeping things as competitive as possible.

So far, the Dev Diaries series has been a hit with the Valorant fanbase. It is an excellent way to show that they care, and also help players to better understand the game. It sounds like they have more planned, so keep your eyes peeled.
