How to Play the IW4x Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Client

Feeling nostalgic? IW4x is the perfect Modern Warfare 2 experience

With the recent resurgence in interest for the classic Call of Duty titles, namely Modern Warfare 2, we figured now would be a great time to make sure everybody is aware of the IW4x project. IW4x is a modified client for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which features new content and cheat-protected, dedicated servers.

IW4x is an open source project that allows you to set up your own dedicated servers with modifications for Modern Warfare 2 on top of a decentralized network. Modifications are not restricted to just scripting the client in the way you like but also introducing old new gameplay mechanics like leaning, new guns, new maps and new gametypes that haven't been accessible to the world of Modern Warfare 2… until now!

IW4x is a modification of the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, developed by Infinity Ward. The goal of this modification is to finish the - in our eyes - unfinished development of the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, like other projects (e.g. alterIWNet and fourDeltaOne) did in the past.

It's important to note that IW4x is only available on PC - due to the nature of this client, it is not possible to play IW4x on Xbox 360, Xbox One, or PlayStation 3. Sorry console players!

How to Install IW4x

While it is possible to play IW4x without owning the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 base game on Steam, we do not condone piracy and therefore will not be providing the methods to install the client this way. To install IW4x, simply download and extract the IW4x client files and DLC files into your Modern Warfare 2 install folder, this is typically located at the following location:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Once that is done, simply run the IW4x launcher and dive into the expanded Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 universe!

Support

If you're looking for support with IW4x, be sure to visit the project's Support Center and Discord server. We're just reporting on an awesome mod, we can't help you with any of the issues that you may come across!

Is IW4x Safe?

IW4x is an entirely separate client from the retail copy which is available on Steam. Because of this, no Steam services are used, only the game's assets. There is no risk of VAC ban, and anything done on your IW4x account will not carry over to the Steam version of the game.

You can read more about this on IW4x's about page.

Why Play IW4x?

It's no secret that the Call of Duty titles tend to degrade in quality over the years, especially on PC. This is partially due to the repetitiveness of experiencing the same content for so long, but the biggest issue is the infestation of cheaters. The goal of IW4x is to revive and enhance the Modern Warfare 2 experience.

With the rumors suggesting that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remastered will not feature a Multiplayer mode, IW4x will only continue to grow for the foreseeable future. When (if) this title is released, the assets are almost certain to be ported to IW4x - allowing players to experience modern assets in a Multiplayer environment.
