Let's dive into our first look at gameplay for the Firebase Z Zombies map in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War!

The launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's first post-launch Zombies experience is just around the corner. Firebase Z Gameplay and Behind the Scenes - Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Level Design

Firebase Z is split into two main sections, the initial spawn area consists of a village while the other portion of the map is an Omega facility for researching the Dark Aether. Anthony Saunders, the Lead Level Designer at Treyarch, describes this concept as similar to Moon from the original Black Ops title.

The flow and level design of Outpost 25 calls back a little bit to Moon in that you start in the village and take a teleporter over to the Outpost itself.

The village and outpost are divided into several sections, each of which comprised of its own unique features and elements. The named locations which we can see in this behind the scenes video are as follows.

  • OPC
  • Mission Control
  • Data Center
  • Helipad
  • Scorched Defense
  • Jungle Defense
  • Equipment Storage
  • Barracks
  • Courtyard
  • Atrium

Objectives

The Main Quest in Firebase Z is set to unlock on Friday, February 5th at 9AM PT. Until then, players can expect to uncover side quests and the primary guided objectives of the map. In the behind the scenes gameplay, we can see five of these casual objectives which are given to the player throughout the course of normal gameplay.

  • Activate Aether Reactors
  • Protect the Collection Units
  • Assault Wave Incoming (Defend the Aether Reactor)
  • Protect Fire Control Unit
  • Enter the Teleporter

Enemies

Firebase Z introduces an all-new recurring enemy type, the Mimic. Resembling the Margwa from Black Ops 3 with a Dark Aether twist, the Mimic was recovered from the Dark Aether in May of 1984 by Tobias Shork.

The Mimic is described as having a "camouflage ability" in which it disguises itself as various inanimate objects in order to deceive its prey. The subject escaped containment after transforming into a rifle, resulting in an unknown guard to open its cage and set it free. Other objects that its known to transform into include the following.

  • Crate
  • Equipment Storage Container
  • Chair
  • Rifle
  • Aetherium Containment Canister

Anthony Saunders describes the Mimic as a sort of bait-and-switch enemy...

If you see something sitting around and wonder why nobody picked it up ... It's probably a Mimic.
