People are abusing Fortnite’s new “Gyro Aiming” setting to get zero recoil on controller

If you struggle to keep your aim steady in Fortnite, Gyro Aiming could be the answer.

If you struggle to keep your aim steady in Fortnite, Gyro Aiming could be the answer.

Though there was little in the way of new content, Tuesday’s Fortnite v19.30 patch did include some changes to the game settings as well as a few exciting leaks. The update featured the addition of Gyro Aiming and “Flick Stick” for players using controller.

These gyro-based motion controls allow players to move the camera (usually done with the right analogue stick) by tilting or turning their gamepad. Gyro was previously available on Nintendo Switch and Android, but has now been improved and expanded to work with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC too.

There are some fairly complex options available for Gyro, such as custom sensitivities, acceleration, and axes of rotation. You can read Epic’s full official tutorial and FAQ here.

While this news was likely ignored at first glance by many fans, others have already begun testing the new settings. In fact, they have even identified a very powerful strategy!

By enabling Gyro when aiming down sights, players are able to effectively cancel out all recoil simply by tilting the controller down when shooting. This is especially deadly for tracking enemies at a longer range with a MK-Seven for example.

However, right now it’s too early to tell how relevant this will actually be. There are plenty of people on both sides of the argument.

Popular streamer and YouTuber @imsticksfn shared a video of himself demonstrating the no recoil method in Creative mode. “If you guys play on controller you definitely have to try this out”, he recommended.

On the other hand, Fortnite controller pro Whofishy argued, “Gyro aiming has little to no impact on gameplay. You can use it to minimize recoil but that can already done by pulling your joystick down”, adding “Definitely not worth to switch to, at least not before this FNCS”.

Whofishy also mentioned that there are currently a lot of bugs with the settings, plus aim assist is disabled whenever Gyro is active. Additionally, Epic may well patch Gyro to prevent the “no recoil” strat.

So, if you play on controller, there’s no harm trying this new feature out, but it’s probably wise to avoid using it in tournaments until the issues have been fixed. Only time will tell whether this becomes a go-to way to improve your aim in Fortnite.
