How to Get Key Fragments in League of Legends

Skins get wins, so find more with these chests and keys.

When you play League of Legends, there's a wide range of cosmetics you can purchase to personalize your time playing. Since the game is free-to-play, this is how Riot Games makes their money (and how they afford making so many spin-off games like Mageseeker and Convergence). However, if you don't want to bust your bank on Riot Points, there's another way to get champion skins and emotes: hextech chests. Every time you or someone on your team gets an S-ranking while they play, you get a chest. However, you can only open these chests with hextech keys, which are made from key fragments. So, then how do you get key fragments?

What honor level gets key fragments?

One of the easiest ways to get key fragments is just by playing League of Legends. No, Seriously. The most direct way to earn key fragments is by doing well in normal, ranked, or ARAM game modes and earning honor levels.

Let's break down how honor levels work. As you play the game, you slowly earn your honor levels just by being an active participant in each match. If you get honored by your teammates after the game, you get a boost in honor level earnings, making your honor rank increase faster.  It's unknown the exact metric/amount it takes to level up, but once you reach honor level two, you are eligible to randomly get key fragments at any time for your good behavior and teamwork. In a new season, players estimate it takes 4-6 weeks to reach honor level two and begin randomly earning key fragments.

Playing with friends or getting the most kills in the game are the most effective ways to get your teammates to honor you and increase your honor level.

If you're uncertain about how well you're doing in-game, search your own summoner name in Tracker Network's LoL Stats. There you can check out your stats to get a better sense of your skill-level and where you can improve.

Where to find your keys and key fragments in the League of Legends client

To do anything with your key fragments, you'll need to go to your Loot tab. In your League of Legends client, this is the tab with a hammer hitting what looks like a gem. It's sits in between the backpack (Collection) and stack of coins (Shop) icons.

Here in the Loot tab you'll find skin shards, champion shards, hextech chests, blue essence, mastery tokens, mythic essence, key fragments, and more. You'll be able to see your collection of key fragments in the "materials" section. Meanwhile, your amount of finished keys are indicated in the bar below all your materials, champions, and skins shards.

Other methods to get key fragments in League of Legends

Luckily, even if  your a casual solo player, there are other ways to get key fragments. For example, each time a new event pass comes out for League of Legends, you can earn tokens to buy certain rewards. Lots of times players save up to buy prestige skins, but you can also buy hextech chests, hextech keys, and key fragments.

You can also simply buy chests and keys straight up. if you go to the Loot tab of the League of Legends shop, you'll find loot chests, orbs, and keys for sale. A hextech key is for sale for 125 RP, as is a hextech chest. If you buy a chest and key bundle, though, it's only 195 RP. Be careful, though. Don't bust your bank trying to catch up on keys.

There is another way to get key fragments, though. While you shouldn't rely on this method, League of Legends sometimes offers up random challenges with rewards such as blue essence, hextech chests, hextech keys, and key fragments. Keep your eyes peeled and play whatever Teamfight Tactics rounds or new champions these challenges require.
