Nintendo Takes Legal Action After Tears of the Kingdom Art Book Leak

Never mess with Nintendo's legal team.

Nintendo is taking legal action against those responsible for leaking content from the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom art book online. The leak was reported back in February, which revealed that the entire art book had been scanned and made available for viewing online, showcasing new characters, enemies, and locations. While no major plot spoilers were revealed, the leak prompted Nintendo to issue takedown notices to Discord to remove the images and scrub the servers hosting them.

Now, Nintendo is going further in its efforts to punish those responsible for the leak. It remains unclear how someone gained early access to the art book in question, but this is not the first time such a leak has occurred. In 2021, two Pokémon fans leaked details of the then-unreleased Pokémon Sword and Shield via images taken from a strategy guide book. The Pokémon Company's lawyers pounced on the situation, ultimately settling with the pair for $300,000 to cover damages, attorney's fees, and other costs.

The next step in the current situation will likely be for Discord to comply with Nintendo's subpoena, which will require the company to hand over the details of those responsible for the leak. This could potentially open them up to similar legal action.
