Mojang Announces New Minecraft Spinoff: Minecraft Legends

Mojang and Blackbird Interactive took the stage to showcase their new take on Minecraft, Minecraft Legends.

Set in the story of a battle for an Overworld uniting against invading piglins, Minecraft Legends tells the story of how the mobs of the Overworld came together to defend their home.

The Overworld for Minecraft Legends seems to be set in biomes any experienced Minecraft player would recognize. Like in Vanilla Minecraft, these different biomes will genereate different materials.

Minecraft Legends will also utilize familiar mobs from the Minecraft main world. However, original mobs will be made specifically for Minecraft Legends. This is not uncharted territory for Minecraft as they have already created plenty of unique mobs for Minecraft Dungeons. This video breaks down how much depth was truly put in to the design of the mobs and the different functions they provide.

From the trailer, we can see the player objective is to collect materials, establish bases and rally forces against the piglins. As for the type of game, it is hard to say what this will play similar to for now. When the game was first announced I was expecting a MOBA style game, but now it seems to be an action paced RTS style game where you control your character in an over world view while your minions do your bidding.

It has been announced there will be cross platform, co-op and multiplayer pvp for Minecraft Legends. Consisting of two teams of four, Minecraft Legends will set teams to capture and destroy their enemies base.

The way a typical battle is laid out is each team will spend time collecting and gathering resources. These resources will be shared amongst the team so players can be deliberate on how they split their labor. After players feel like they are ready for war the next phase of a Legends map is to take on destroying your enemy's base while remaining diligent about protecting your own. This dynamic is sure to crack even the most experienced of gamers.

As a big fan of Minecraft Dungeons, I am personally looking forward to Minecraft Legends. Minecraft Legends is set to release on April 18th, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
