How to find The Butcher in Diablo IV

Will you find The Butcher, or will The Butcher find you?

With every new Diablo game, there are always thrilling new easter eggs for players to find. A highlight in Diablo IV has been the fan-hunt for The Butcher. This historic boss can show up in your own game, but how do you find him? And once you do, how do you survive the Butcher's clutches?

Who is The Butcher?

The Butcher is a Diablo I quest boss, and then the Diablo III end-of-Act I boss. The evil Maghda leads you down to his fiery lair in hopes of offing your hero. In both games, his slams, hooks, and stuns have been infamous troublemakers for all players.

Where is The Butcher in Diablo IV?

When looking for The Butcher, your best shot is just to keep dungeon-diving. The Butcher is a very rare random spawn who will appear in any dungeon throughout Diablo IV. Worse, The Butcher can appear at any level, from 10-100. You could meet him as a seasoned character or a baby without a full equipment roster. This makes running into him a serious threat for players still leveling up. Hardcore players are in particular danger. If The Butcher surprises them in a dungeon and they die, their whole run could be ruined.

After you fight The Butcher and win, you'll get a random assortment or rewards. The most important object you have a chance to get, though, is The Butcher's Cleaver. And no, this isn't the blue-tier Butcher's Cleaver of Diablo III. As a weapon, The Butcher's Cleaver is a well-stated one-handed axe that will do well in the hands of a Barbarian or Druid.

Try to play this fight as careful as you can, though. If you lose, you don't get another shot. The Butcher will despawn and you'll have to wait hours– if not hundreds of hours– to find him again.

How can you be prepared for the Butcher in Diablo IV?

To be best prepared for The Butcher's random dungeon appearance, you can adjust your build. For example, you can run dungeons with a more single-target build, with a focus on heavy damage or durability. You'll either need to burst him down quick or be able to survive long-term. Diablo IV is definitely not afraid to punish you if you have a mob build but try to use it on a big boss.

While in fight, beware of The Butcher's abilities. He has a whole host of stuns and slows in his Hook, Headbutt, Charge, and Roar attacks. Even though focusing so hard on dodging  might make the fight take longer, the less you get hit the safer you'll be.

Sometimes, though, as much as everyone loves to see this rare and cool easter egg, running will be your only option. A random Butcher spawn has become infamous for ruining some streamers' Diablo IV Hardcore runs.
