How Long to Defuse The Spike in Valorant?

In Valorant, you have less than 60 seconds to save the world.

When you're playing Valorant, your main goal is either to defend your objectives or plant an explosive, called the Spike, in enemy territory. While the concept seems simple enough, the timing of it all is what can really throw new players off their game. For example, as a defender you'll have to know how to time defusing the Spike. Otherwise your team might end up in smithereens. But how long does defusing take in Valorant?

What is The Spike?

The Spike is the explosive device that Valorant players use to destroy enemy objectives. A defender's goal is to successfully stop the enemy from taking control of Point A, B, or C and planting the Spike. Or, if an enemy agent plants the Spike, your job is to defuse it. That's how you win a round of Valorant.

When an enemy plants the Spike, it takes four seconds to activate. Then, your map will give you a marker indicating which location the Spike has been planted at. After that, the bomb will explode 45 seconds later. During that time is when you must get to whichever objective it was planted at, kill or divert enemy attention, and defuse the Spike.

What's the timing on Valorant's Spike defusal?

If you want to defuse a Spike, you have to be timely with it. It takes at least seven full seconds to defuse, and the bomb's countdown does not pause while you are defusing. So no, you can't get to the Spike with one second left and defuse it. Even the most successful agents can't pull that off– But you'll definitely have a better shot at it if you use Tracker Network's pick-rate stats to pick your new favorite agent.

To help yourself make effective choices about defusing, you should know about Spike timer cues. After all, when its armed, the Spike will beep. It starts off slow, but over time the beeps will get faster and faster until the Spike eventually explodes, destroying everyone and everything in the objective's vicinity.

The beeps work as follows:

  • The first 25 seconds = one beep per second
  • 25-35 seconds = two beeps per second
  • 35-40 seconds = four beeps per second
  • 40 to explosion = eight beeps per second

If the beeps are already four per second when you reach the objective and you don't feel confident in being able to retake the point and defuse, you're likely better off not trying. Instead, get as far away as possible and keep your weapons and abilities for the next round.

Best ways to clutch a last-second defusal

The enemy just planted the Spike on A. What do you do now? The best beginner tip to defusing the bomb is using your abilities to help. Use Valorant's vision-blocking abilities like Sage's wall, Viper's poison, or other smokes/screens to obscure yourself. Then, defuse the Spike from there.

Also, if you get to the Spike quickly, there's a trick you can use to defuse and defend yourself. At the halfway point of defusing (three-and-a-half seconds), the defuse will "save" meaning that you can toggle off the defuse for a second or two. You can use your guns or abilities to help protect yourself, and then you can get back to the Spike and finish defusing for the leftover three-and-a-half seconds.

Another way to improve your gameplay is to emulate the pros. Either copy their tools like their favorite guns and crosshairs, or  try some of their shooting, ability, and defusing tricks that you watch in official matches or on Twitch streams.
