Bungie cancels plans to add full Cosmodrome in Destiny 2

Bungie has chosen making new content over bringing this classic destination into Destiny 2.

In June of 2020 Bungie announced a new system of the Destiny franchise known as the Destiny Content Vault. With this, Bungie would be able to cycle out older, unused parts of Destiny 2 into this vault in order to make changes to possibly bring them back at a later date.

With the announcement of the DCV Bungie also revealed that they would be able to use this system to port parts of the original Destiny over to its sequel. Specifically, Bungie stated that the Cosmodrome would be returning as well as its three Strikes.

Here’s a screenshot of what Bungie promised back in June of last year:

When Beyond Light launched we saw a decent section of the Cosmodrome return as well as the Will of Crota Strike. When Season of the Chosen launched on Tuesday, Guardians were eager to jump back into a fully fleshed out Cosmodrome alongside two more returning Strikes.

Unfortunately for these eager Guardians, it quickly became apparent that the Cosmodrome was the same size as before. To add to this, players were grinding out the Strike playlist for a chance to replay the classic Strikes but quickly found that they simply weren't in the playlist.

Bungie Community Manager Dylan ‘dmg04’ Gafner sent out the following tweet to keep players in the loop about what the problem was with these Strikes:

“Devil's Lair will have a direct launch node from the Cosmodrome map next week, and will be available through the Vanguard Strikes playlist. Until then, it is available as a Nightfall. Fallen S.A.B.E.R. is currently unavailable due to a bug.”

So Devil’s Lair will be playable from the Director next week, and Fallen S.A.B.E.R. will hopefully be available soon but what about the Cosmodrome?

In the most recent ‘This Week at Bungie’ blog post, Gafner gave the community some sad news in regards to Bungie’s plans for the Cosmodrome moving forward:

“As we approached Beyond Light’s launch, it became clear to us that we had a choice to make: After returning all three of its original strikes, do we invest more time and resources in bringing Cosmodrome to D1 parity or do we switch our focus to building new experiences for Year 4 and beyond? Given that we believed we had achieved our original goals and knowing the community and team’s desire for new content, we chose the latter option,” says Gafner.

Gafner then makes an apology to the community about how the studio failed to keep the community up to date with their plans and led them to having false expectations: “...when we made that decision, we failed to properly update your expectations for how far the Cosmodrome experience was going to be extended and that was a mistake,” says Gafner.

While it really is a shame that the full version of the Cosmodrome will not make its way into Destiny 2, it does come with the caveat that this means Bungie can put more resources into creating new and original content.

In this same TWAB, Bungie did mention Vault of Glass returning again, so at least that is still on track for a release sometime during Year 4.
