Activision's 2023 'Call of Duty' Title Will Be A 'Modern Warfare II' Expansion

For the first time in over 20 years, there will not be a new Call of Duty title this year.

A shocking revelation has emerged from Activision as Bloomberg reports Call of Duty will not have a new title this year. Call of Duty has put out a new title every year with out missing a beat and while the rumor mills have been spinning about a new Call of Duty title launching this fall, people close to the game says it is merely an expansion for Modern Warfare II.

Call of Duty has been rapidly evolving in the past decade as they have experimented with new game modes, engines, and battle royale. However, this year Activision wants to try and make an expansion for Modern Warfare II stand alone as a full-price release as it seeks to add on to the campaign of Modern Warfare II. The people close to the project stated old maps and modes should carry over into the new expansion but you should still expect new maps as well.

Activision-owned studio Sledgehammer Games will be spearheading the new "premium expansion" for Modern Warfare II to help fill time as Treyarch will focus on the next major Call of Duty title for 2024. Sledgehammer is responsible for Call of Duty hits like Modern Warfare 3 and the original Modern Warfare so there is no doubt they should be able to deliver a top notch experience during this experimental phase for Call of Duty.

This all comes after Activision Executives have reportedly outlined a new vision for Call of Duty where the franchise will now rotate between Modern Warfare and Black Ops every two years where each game will now receive two years of support. As Modern Warfare II reigns as the top selling Call of Duty title of all time, it makes me wonder if an expansion for the game will be just as successful.

Nonetheless for now you can expect to shovel out another $60 at minimum for Modern Warfare II this fall while Activison continues to develop what we can assume is a new Black Ops title (that will be on Nintendo Switch). Time will tell if this new vision is successful and of course this all can change once and if the new Microsoft acquisition is successful.
