After months of anticipation, League of Legends' brand-new game mode, alongside the forthcoming Soul Fighter event, are finally on the horizon. Intrigued by League of Legends' Arena Mode but still trying to figure out how to play? Find out by reading on!

What is League of Legends' Arena Game Mode

This time, we won’t be hopping into another game of One For All and Ultra Rapid Fire. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, a new and exciting game mode is about to arrive, promising fast-paced matches that will surely be brimming with fun and action. The arena is a game mode consisting of four two-man teams vying for survival as they face off round after round. You can enter the queue as either solo or with a friend. Unfortunately, though, entering the game mode with more than one player is not possible for now.

Players will have the luxury to ban any champion of their choice, before selecting their champions. You and your duo can choose champions that synergize with each other like a Lucian-Nami or Yasuo-Malphite, based on a meme, or just anyone. Just like in blind pick, mirror matchups are possible and you won’t be able to see what your enemies have picked until the game officially starts.

Unlike the initial impression, it’s not going to work by letting four teams fight all at the same time. It will start as a 2v2, with the winner being able to retain their overall health and the loser has to lose some health pretty much like Teamfight Tactics.

How does the League of Legends Arena work?

Each round consists of shop and combat phase, where players begin at level three and will gain one and two levels alternately per round.

It has been mentioned that in this game mode, runes and summoner spells except for Flash are out of the picture. Here, you will be able to equip Flash and another spell called as Flee. Flee sort of functions like a mini-ghost, which is meant to be weak as it will be replaced by Augments in the later rounds. Another, snowballing isn’t going to work here as well as each champions’ progress shall only depend on items, augments and juices.

Five arena will be used, and one of it is designated for the shop phase.

Shop Phase

Shope Phase will offer either augments or gold so you can purchase items.

  • Shop round 1: 1000 gold
  • Shop round 2: New Augment
  • Shop round 3: 1000 gold
  • Shop round 4: 3000 gold
  • Shop round 5: New Augment
  • Shop round 6: 3000 gold
  • (Repeat 4-6 until a victor is decided)

Items are going to cost either 1000 or 3000 gold. Boots and starter items can be purchased for 1000 gold, while legendary and mythic items will be 3000. The prices for all complete items are fixed, and there will be no components just like in a normal League match.

If you have an extra amount of gold, you may purchase a Juice. Juices are purchasable elixir-like items that grant combat boosts but only last for a round. Currently, there are four juices that you can choose from at your disposal.

The shop phase will end after 45 seconds, or 8 seconds if all players are done with their purchases. Each team will also have one enemy dummy by their side to attack or practice on in case they get bored during the shop phase. Be careful not to use your ultimate or abilities having long cooldowns on them though.

Combat Phase

At the conclusion of the combat phase, the players will be teleported to an arena where they will engage in a round-robin battle. All players will start at 20 health, and shall lose health after losing a combat round. Initially, you will lose 2 health but it will scale every round until it reaches 8.

It is also worth noting that when you or your ally has less HP, you will gain movement speed, slow resistance and tenacity depending on their remaining health. Additionally, tenacity is increased if you’re hit with crowd control like stun or snare. When one side loses both of its players, the round finishes. Meanwhile, you and your team will each receive 350 gold if you achieve at least one kill.

A brand-new plant has been put into the four arenas to aid player survival within the fiery perimeter. These are called as the Power Flower. Power Flower is a plant that gives the attacker either a heal, shield or flat cooldown reduction. Terrains, bushes and blast cones can also be seen in all arenas.

One unique feature of the arena is the ring of fire, or officially called the Ring of Wrath. Ring of Wrath spawns after forty seconds, encircling the whole stadium and the playable area continues to shrink over time. This design choice ensures that battles between players never go on for too long by confining them to a small region. However, ranged players should keep the upper hand early on so they may avoid engaging in close-quarters battle.

At the start of the fourth round, cameos will start to appear to make things exciting and a lot more complicated. During this round, Soul Fighters will join the fray bringing in their signature abilities. Each Soul Fighter champion has unique skills that they will use to become a nuisance to all players.

  • Evelynn will give every player in the game camouflage.
  • Gwen will give the player with the lowest health her W ability, Hallowed Mist.
  • Jhin will cast his ultimate on every player in the game.
  • Lux will cast her ultimate on whoever steps across her laser, which moves around the arena.
  • Naafiri will summon wolves who patrol the arena and attach the nearest champion.
  • Pyke will use his E stun, Phantom Undertow, on the player furthest from him.
  • Samira will extend every cc used in the game, then use her ultimate on everyone after doing this six times.
  • Sett will use his W, Haymaker, on whoever kills him.
  • Shaco will fill the arena with his boxes.
  • Viego will make the first player to die turn into him for a short amount of time.

What are Augments?

Augments on the other hand allows players to think outside the box and unleash their creative side as they combine these with their champions’ kit to execute flashy and effective plays.

Augments come in three tiers: Silver, Gold and Prismatic. During the second and fifth rounds, players can pick one augment and can re-roll in case they do not like what’s offered. LoL’s Arena has over 100 Augments to choose from, so feel free to pick which among them will synergize well with your kit. These can either come as a buff, additional damage or make your champ a bit broken by giving you another keystone, spell, abilities. During this part, just wish that you’re lucky enough to get the best augment to exist.

This is going to be interesting as they're going to add both new and old features. Remember old Fiora's ult?

What happens if you lose the game?

League of Legends’ Arena Mode is a fast-paced game that even allows you to exit the game and queue up again for another match once you’re eliminated.

League of Legends' Arena Ranked System

Since it has been years since an event-themed game mode was released (like to Ascension and Odyssey), players are understandably excited about the newest addition to the game. Interestingly though, this game mode is going to have its own Ranked system. Players can earn points by dominating the rest of the team, and being in the top two teams. Otherwise, they’ll lose points. According to Riot games, during the first five games, there’ll be loss mitigation so you can rack up points.

Arena’s ranked system is going to have five ranked tiers, namely:

  • Wood
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Gladiator

When is the release date of League of Legends’ Arena Game Mode?

Arena is expected to arrive on the live servers on July 20, 2023 during the Soul Fighter event. So, before this date arrives, be sure to check out how the Arena works, get a duo and brainstorm with them on how you’re going to reach Gladiator together.

This 2v2v2v2 game mode shall stay in League of Legends for the whole event.
